As an international shipping company, we specialize in a wide range of services. Overseas shipping has a variety of options to choose based on the best the needs of the goods. Depending on the type of shipment, there is always an option that will be better suited than another.
For instance, most oversized shipments will use what’s known as a flatrack because a standard ocean cargo container won’t fit. Along with that, there are many specialized international shipping processes for goods.
However, the most used methods are 20 foot and 40 foot containers, both the standard size and high cube. There are numerous varieties used by freight forwarders but these are common for cargo related to international relocation and shipping. Almost all international shipping companies will use these containers, but they don’t always offer the same services in them.
The next important question would be to ask yourself, which shipping container size is right for my shipment? That will depend on whether your cargo is only 100 cubic feet of household goods, 3 motorcycles, or a tool chest and a sofa.
How to Ship Cargo Overseas via Container
International container shipping is our most popular service for overseas transport services. We offer different sizes and services inside of these containers to give our customers the best values and time frames.
Regardless of the size of the shipping container, two terms that are quite common in relation to international container shipment are FCL and LCL. These stand for full container load and less container load respectively.
These two terms are used quite frequently by overseas shippers, but you will also hear shared/consolidated container and sole use container. As we specialize in international relocation and vehicle shipping, we’ll explain what each means in these terms.
International Less than Container Load Shipping
The terms themselves are pretty simple. Let’s say we have an international move of a one bedroom apartment with only 250 cubic feet of cargo. It wouldn’t make sense to book an entire 20 foot container and only use a small amount of space.
So to save you money, we fill the container with other shipments bound for the same final destination. We actually specialize in this type of consolidation, which is a more relevant term than LCL. Depending on the commodity, this is a very practical method. This gives your overseas transportation the most value as you only pay for the space you use.
International Full Container Load Shipping
FCL, is the equivalent to our sole use container service. This just means that you’ve booked your own container and can use the space to the fullest. Another benefit of this is that your international shipment will move on the water more quickly. This is because LCL containers need to be full before they leave, while FCL can leave with just your goods.
